1:12 PM - the mii parade

productivity

A couple of weeks ago, a friend had a Wii-themed birthday party. My favorite part about the Wii is that you can create a little "Mii," a cartoon representation of yourself or a friend who then plays games like Tennis, Bowling, or Boxing. If you haven't seen it, check out this little Flash re-creation of the Mii Creation process that someone posted on the internet. In any case, as a snack for the party, I decided to make little strawberry Miis with white chocolate heads.

In other news, I have mostly finished MarinaLuna.net, a site that I built for a friend and fellow aerialist. I built the site with blocks of PHP so she can update, for example, a her upcoming performances or her photos, without having to hack through lots of HTML like I would if I was going to update my own site. It's not a full CMS, but it's designed to make things easier.

11:06 PM - I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want...

whippersnappers

One thing I've noticed about living in Berkeley is that I'm now 10 years older than most of the population. I'm actually really looking forward to moving into San Francisco and starting up a broader social scene with people who are actually my peers.

Living among college students, though, has made me really appreciate (and eagerly anticipate) the upcoming transition. Loud college parties in my neighborhood are the norm on weekends, and the one tonight started particularly early. It's directly upstairs, and the speakers are cranked. I was tired after a long week and shaking my internal fist at the crazy kids and their music, when I realized... they were playing my music. It started with bad dance music that I am ashamed to admit that I recognized, but soon it became pretty clear that the kids were playing music from my college days. Ten years ago.

Then I found a note on my door asking for my patience with the noise, blah blah blah, because they were having an "8th grade party."

I'm soothing my ego with the most delicious organic strawberry ice cream. And I'm secretly delighted to hear a room full of girls singing along loudly with Hanson and the Spice Girls.

4:25 PM - like a discussion from a high school English class...

metablogging

Okay, I just read this article about Tim O'Reilly, a blogger who proposed that other bloggers sign a "code of conduct" aimed toward ending personal attacks and vitriol in the (I can't believe I'm about to use this word) blogosphere. One of his guidelines is that if a personal attack appears in the comments section, the blog owner should delete the comment.

After proposing these guidelines, O'Reilly received personal attacks and vitriol in the comments section of his blog. He chose not to delete those comments in the interest of promoting discussion about his guidelines. Still... doesn't his decision not to follow his own guidelines indicate that perhaps the guidelines aren't as effective as he'd intended?
